A question we get often: what is the difference between IOSH and NEBOSH, and which one should I take?
There is no single answer, because it depends on what you are responsible for at work. This should help you decide — for yourself, for your team, or for your business.

A little background
The Institution of Occupational Safety and Health and the National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health are two of the most widely recognised names in health and safety.
Neither body delivers training itself. Both design the programmes, syllabuses and assessments, which accredited providers such as Cortex Training and Development then deliver.
IOSH is the chartered membership body for health and safety professionals, and it also offers qualifications. Based in the UK, it is the largest organisation of its kind, with more than 48,000 members across over 130 countries. Roughly 180,000 people attend IOSH training courses each year.
NEBOSH, also UK-based, is an awarding body offering internationally recognised qualifications in health, safety and environmental management. More than 50,000 people enrol on NEBOSH courses each year, from every kind of industry and sector.
When IOSH is the right choice
If you have limited health and safety responsibilities, work in a lower-risk environment, or are just starting out, IOSH courses give you a working understanding of the subject, enough to start assessing and controlling risk and to take part in incident investigations.
For many managers and supervisors, IOSH (UK) Managing Safely covers what they actually need. As a rule of thumb: if you oversee a team and are accountable for how they work and how they fare, this is the one.
When NEBOSH is the right choice
NEBOSH goes deeper into management topics — safety management systems, risk assessment, and identifying and controlling the hazards that recur across industries: work equipment, electricity, fire, chemicals.
It gives a fuller understanding of what a health and safety professional is actually responsible for. Many employers in Brunei specifically ask for the NEBOSH GIC when recruiting, and it satisfies the certification requirement to act as a Workplace Safety and Health Officer under the Workplace Safety and Health Act, Chapter 277.
If you carry health and safety management responsibilities, or you want a career in the field, the GIC is the stronger choice.
One thing to know about the GIC
NEBOSH revised the General Certificates for 2026. The units are now GIC1 and GIC2, the practical unit is marked on a points-based scheme, and both results are released together. Our syllabus update explains what changed, and our guide to the GIC covers the course itself.
What either one is worth in Brunei
Both are respected additions to a CV, and both teach skills you can apply immediately across a range of industries, in line with Brunei’s workplace safety and health legislation.
They are not mutually exclusive either. Plenty of people take Managing Safely first, find the subject suits them, and go on to the GIC afterwards.
